Sign Onto Supervisor Anderson’s Letter to Keep our Lakes and Reservoirs Open!

Unfortunately, the East County communities I represent are once again being threatened with restricted access to our region’s many beautiful lakes and reservoirs. With the City of San Diego’s (City) proposed budget for Fiscal Year (FY) 2025, a worrisome $59,000 cut was proposed for the City’s Public Utilities Department (PUD). This PUD budget shortfall will directly result in reduced public access to El Capitan, Hodges, and Sutherland Reservoirs.

To address this, I wrote a letter to Mayor Todd Gloria and the San Diego City Council to express our concerns and to highlight specifically what we’ll lose from these cuts.

Ongoing Lake Access Advocacy
As your County Supervisor, I have been championing your message to protect recreational access to our local reservoirs. In November 2021, I authored a Board Letter to explore the feasibility of providing operational support for the recreational use of reservoirs on a permanent basis. In March 2023, I authored a Board Letter to look for funding sources, including support for using the County budget to cover the costs and ensure the lakes stay open. Finally, in October of 2023, the County reported back to the Board with alternative funding opportunities as well as considerations for partnerships and collaborations. Many constituents have expressed the need for a long-term solution to the challenge of City budget cuts affecting reservoir access and I will continue to advocate to my colleagues on the Board to support this effort.
